17-year-old high school senior Connor McReynolds gets to spend three hours each day as a "peer buddy" at Sparkman High School. It happens to be his favorite class.

A "peer buddy" works with students who have special needs.

"I just started working with the students, and I just started getting really close with them, and I just love working with them I guess," said McReynolds.

He loves working with students like Dan. Dan is autistic. So everyday, Connor works with him on skills to help him become a little more independent- skills like sorting and delivering newspapers.

Connor said since being paired with Dan at the beginning of the semester, he has seen a lot of improvement.

"He listens to me really well, and apparently, I'm the only one that can get him to eat his lunch," said McReynolds.

"He is trustworthy, he is honest, he is truly genuine with his communication, his concerns for the students, and I think that is important above all. He cares. He is truly interested in seeing them achieve and be successful as much as possible," said teacher Yalonda Carpenter.

Speaking of success, Connor has found much it as a photographer. He says outside of being a "peer buddy", he simply loves participating in his photography class, and it shows.

However, when it comes to a future career, Connor would like to attend medical school one day to become a physical therapist.

"I play soccer for the school and I've played soccer all my life and it was a way that I could stay involved in sports and also, I'm really interested in the medical field, so it could combine the two," said McReynolds.

He is dedicated to a life of helping others.

"The smallest things matter," said McReynolds.

That is what makes Connor McReynolds a WAFF 48 Star Student.
