
Four people were hurt in an accident between an ambulance and an SUV in Decatur where the SUV driver is being charged with DUI.
The crash happened about 7:00 Wednesday morning near Engle's Harbor on Highway 20. Police say the Decatur Emergency Medical Service ambulance was westbound on Highway 20 after transporting a patient to Huntsville.
A GMC Yukon driven by 28-year-old Paula Campbell was eastbound on Highway 20. Campbell attempted to turn onto Neher Road in front of the ambulance. The ambulance was unable to stop and hit the SUV in the passenger side, flipping the Yukon onto it side.
Police say the ambulance was not running code and was traveling the speed limit. Both DEMSI employees were injured and taken to Decatur General Hospital. Will Nessman, the ambulance driver, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
DEMSI EMT Cassey Rutherford was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and underwent surgery.
Campbell was treated at released at Decatur General Hospital and is in the custody of Decatur Police. She was charged with driving under the influence.
Campbell's passenger, 32-year-old Christine Brooker, was flown to Huntsville Hospital with life threatening injuries. Her condition is unknown.
