BIRMINGHAM – One year after winning the Gulf South Conference East Division and making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 16 seasons, the University of North Alabama women's basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the new eight-team GSC. With one starting returning, the Lions received 27 total points in the annual conference pre-season release.
Head coaches from around the league differed in where they believed UNA would fall in the conference standings. UNA received votes for as high as second place and as low as seventh. The Lions got two votes each for second, fourth and fifth places and a single nod for last place in the league.
Perennial power Delta was selected as pre-season favorite, garnering all seven first-place votes for 49 total points. Valdosta State grabbed five second-place votes and two votes for third place to total 40 points on the ballot. Alabama-Huntsville also saw a wide variety of predictions, getting one vote for first place, four for third place and two for fifth place to accumulate 33 total points.
UNA was a single point ahead of West Alabama's 26 points while West Georgia (23 points), West Florida (16 points) and Christian Brothers (12 points) rounded out the predicted order of finish.
