City council deadlocks again on landfill future

Posted: Updated:
FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Florence city council members remain deadlocked when it comes to its future.

The council debated and voted Tuesday night only to have a tie again.

We spoke to Phil Stevenson with the City of Florence Monday afternoon about what all this means for both the council and city.

City leaders say they know time is running out and that a decision needs to be made on whether or not to expand the landfill or to build a transfer station and have the city's garbage transported out.

"There's a resolution to hire a professional engineering company to design and prepare bidding documents to prepare for a new cell to open in the landfill," said Stevenson.

City officials expect the council to vote, but fear it will just end in another dead-lock, like previous votes.

"What we're going to have to do is be prepared to handle the garbage in some fashion," Stevenson said.

With the landfill expected to reach capacity in December, city workers are trying to figure out just what to do if the council cannot reach an agreement.

"Those are some discussions going on now some contacts have been made but we really haven't made a firm decision about that yet but it is something that will be coming up very soon," he said.

The council has voted 4 times on the issue, and all 4 times it has ended in a tie.
