FLORENCE -- Valdosta State was the beneficiary of a University of North Alabama Own Goal in the 79th minute Sunday as the Lady Blazers downed the Lions 1-0 in a key Gulf South Conference women's soccer match. The loss, UNA's first home defeat of the season, drops the Lions to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the GSC. Valdosta State improves to 8-3 and 4-1.
Defense dominated the first half as there were only six total shots over the first 45 minutes. UNA held the upper hand in the second half with 14 shots to just six for VSU, but the Lions couldn't put the ball in the net.
The only score of the match came at 78:02 as UNA goalkeeper Alex McLay attempted to clear a ball from in front of the goal but her kick ricocheted off a group of players and bounced into the net.
UNA held a 20-to-six shot advantage for the match. VSU's Olivia Mills had four saves in recording the shutout in goal.
UNA hosts Montevallo on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the UNA Soccer Field.
