FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -
The city of Florence could soon have nowhere to dispose of its garbage if a decision isn't made soon.
The city council has been deadlocked as to how to fix the situation.
Half of the council wants to build a transfer station, the other half wants to keep things the same. But the current landfill is expected to run out of space in December.
Environmentalists in Florence say the current landfill is already leaking chemicals into the ground which are seeping into springs and then flowing into Cypress Creek.
If repairs aren't made to the current landfill and a transfer station is not built, environmentalists fear the worst for the shoals.
"We don't want to see the creek polluted, not only because of drinking water issues but because of the fish and the wildlife and the environmental quality of the stream which is a high quality stream that doesn't need to be degraded this way," said John Crowder of Florence.
