FLORENCE -- Even though he has only played in two games for the University of North Alabama, Decatur, Ala., native Michael Schuster has already made an impact on the Lions' program.
Schuster ranks as the leading punter in the NCAA Division II with a 47.9 average on eight punts. His longest punt is 60 yards and he has had two punts downed inside the opponents 20-yard line.
In 2010 UNA's punters averaged just 36.2 yards per punt.
Schuster's performance has helped UNA get off to a 2-0 start and the Lions are ranked No. 4 in the latest NCAA Division II poll.
A graduate of Decatur High School, Schuster originally attended Auburn University before transferring to UNA in 2009. He took over the starting punting duties for the Lions in the Spring and was Most Valuable Player at the Purple-White Spring Game after averaging better than 60 yards per punt.
UNA plays Abilene Christian Saturday (Sept. 17) at 4 p.m. at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
