The Southern League of Professional Baseball has announced today that the Huntsville Stars' RHP Wily Peralta won the 2011 Southern League ERA Award with a 3.46 earned-run average.
Peralta was 9-7 in 21 starts for the Stars before being transferred to Triple-A Nashville on August 11. In 119.2 innings pitched at Double-A this season, the righty gave up only 57 runs (46 earned) on 106 hits. He kept opponents to the fifth-lowest batting average in the league at .243. He was second in most strikeouts per nine innings pitched at 8.80 (117k/119.2ip). Peralta also had the fourth-lowest ratio of baserunners per nine innings pitched at 11.88 (158 total baserunners/119.2ip). In all 119.2 innings of work, Peralta allowed just 48 walks and eight wild pitches.
After his promotion to Triple-A, Peralta continued his domination. The right-hander went 2-0 in five starts, recording 40 strikeouts in just 31 innings pitched. He allowed just 11 walks while maintaining a 2.03 ERA (7er/31ip).
Peralta was honored with the Southern League Pitcher of the Week title for July 25 – August 1 and a Mid-Season All-Star selection. He was also named the Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July. Peralta was signed as a non-drafted free agent on November 26, 2005 by the Brewers.
The Stars ended the season with a 64-73 overall record. They will open the 2012 season on Sunday, April 15 against the Tennessee Smokies.
