JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State wrapped up the Adidas Gamecock Soccer Classic with a 1-0 loss to Louisiana Tech on Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field.
JSU falls to 0-6-0 on the season after Sunday's setback and Friday's 2-1 loss to New Mexico State. The Lady Techsters of LA Tech posted its fourth win of the season after earning a draw on Friday with Tennessee Tech.
LA Tech registered the game-winning goal in the 32nd minute after Olivia Likasewich squeezed the ball just inside the right post for the match's lone goal. Tech's Mo Rockwell was credited with the assist. The Lady Techsters maintained possession for most of the half and had eight of its 12 total shots in the first 45 minutes of action.
"The mindset was to continue to stay consistent. We had to play a fast-pace game and not drop to the level of out opponent and when that changed, they (LA Tech) took advantage of that with the goal," said head coach Julie Davis Carlson.
The Gamecocks also had scoring chances in the opening half, but could not get an equalizing goal. Jax State finished the match with ten total shots, led by Junior Katie Manns' three attempts, two on target. Freshman Jackie Rush also had three scoring chances in the contest. Manns joined freshman Kelsey Roberson and junior Dani Miller on the All-Tournament Team.
"We didn't finish and execute at what we are strong at. I thought we stepped it up in the second half. I think certain players that rotated in played well. We are still a young and naïve team when it comes to managing the game," added Carlson.
In the second half, both teams had four shots apiece with JSU recording three saves. Junior keeper Katelyn Geddings was active with five saves on the afternoon.
Jax State returns to tournament action next weekend as it travels to Boiling Springs, N.C. to participate in the Under Armour Border Classic, hosted by Gardner-Webb University. The Gamecocks will test the host-Runnin' Bulldogs of GWU on Friday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. CST. JSU will face region foe Chattanooga on Sunday, Sept. 11 at Noon.
