Huntsville Police ruled the death of an elderly woman a homicide after police received the autopsy results of Doris Richardson.

Richardson was found at her home in the 2200 block of Bide-A-Wee Drive by her daughter on Friday, August 26.

Neighbors contacted Richardson's daughter on Friday after Richardson failed to pick up her morning paper.

A police report says more than $1,200 worth of property was missing from Richardson's home.

Investigators charged 27-year-old John Clayton Owens with murder Monday. He was arrested on Sunday for third degree burglary in connection with a burglary to the victim's home.

Owens was held in the Madison County Metro Jail while investigators gathered evidence in the death investigation. Owens has a "No Bond" set on the murder charge.

Huntsville Police initially told WAFF 48 News that Richardson died of natural causes.

According to court records, Owens pleaded guilty to burglary charges in 2008 and 2010. He was also found guilty of breaking and entering a vehicle and theft of property.
