Deputy's wife shot while committing burglary

April Brewster was allegedly shot outside this log cabin on County Road 365. April Brewster was allegedly shot outside this log cabin on County Road 365.

Jackson County authorities said a deputy's wife was shot in the face as she was committing a burglary.

The investigation began on Tuesday, August 23 when April Wheeler Brewster was shot and taken to the hospital by a friend.

Investigators said Brewster was shot outside of a home on County Road 365 in Pisgah and not in her car as she originally reported. Investigators uncovered that Brewster may have been in the act of committing a felony burglary just before the shooting and that the victim of the robbery shot Brewster.

Sheriff Phillips declined to name the shooter.  However, Billy Kirby, who lives on County Road 365, said it was him.

Kirby said jewelry, knives, and other merchandise was stolen, but it has been returned to him.

He said he was going to tend to his chickens early Tuesday morning when he noticed a vehicle parked next to the chicken house. He said he then heard sounds coming from his log cabin. Kirby said he went in the front door as the intruder went out the back, and with shotgun in hand, he chased the intruder to the car and ordered them to stop.

Kirby said when the intruder attempted to run over him that's when he fired into the windshield.

All evidence involving this shooting and burglary will be submitted to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office for presentation to the Jackson County Grand Jury. The next Grand Jury meets September 12.

Investigators said Brewster is the wife of Jackson County Sheriff's Deputy and this investigation has not revealed any evidence that the deputy was involved with this or any other criminal activity.
