AUBURN – A News Years Day meeting with defending Southeastern Conference champion Tennessee kicks off Auburn's 2012 SEC schedule, head coach Nell Fortner announced Tuesday. The Tigers will play eight SEC home games with four coming on Sunday afternoons.
The SEC announced each team's 16-game conference schedule Tuesday, completing Auburn's schedule for the 2011-12 season.
"It always fun to get the schedule and see who you start with, who you finish with and everything in between," said Fortner. "It is another good, tough SEC schedule and we are excited for the start of the season."
The Tigers open the slate on Sunday, Jan. 1 at home against the Lady Vols. Auburn then hits the road for a Thursday, Jan. 5 game at Alabama before returning home for a Jan. 8 home game against Georgia.
After playing two of its first three games at home, Auburn will play back-to-back road games at Vanderbilt on Jan. 12 and at Arkansas on Jan. 15. The Tigers will then return home for a Thursday, Jan. 19 home game against South Carolina.
Two of Auburn's final three games in January come on the road at Mississippi State (Jan. 22) and at Ole Miss (Jan. 29). In between, the Tigers get a home game against Kentucky on Jan. 26.
February opens with a home game against Vanderbilt on Thurs., Feb. 2 before taking on Tennessee (Feb. 5) and Florida (Feb. 9) on the road. The Tigers return home for a Sun., Feb. 12 home game against Arkansas before playing the road finale at LSU on Feb. 19.
Auburn will close out the regular season with a pair of home games, taking on in-state rival Alabama on Feb. 23 and Ole Miss on Feb. 26.
The 2011 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament will be in Nashville, Tenn., for the second year in a row, taking place March 1-4 at Bridgestone Arena.
Women's basketball in the SEC does not break up into divisions, allowing teams to play the other 11 members at least once. The Tigers will play home-and-homes this season with Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Alabama.
Auburn returns 10 letterwinners and seven players that saw time as a starter from last year's team that went 16-16 (8-8 SEC) and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. The Tigers welcome two newcomers in freshman Hasina Muhammad and junior college transfer Najat Ouardad.
