JSU Football Ranked No. 9 in FCS Coaches Poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jacksonville State is ranked No. 9 in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches Poll, which was released on Monday.

Defending FCS champion Eastern Washington is ranked No. 1 after receiving 23 of the 28 first-lace votes to earn 687 total points.  Appalachiain State is second, while Georgia Southern is ranked third in the preseason poll.

The Gamecocks enter the 2011 season having been ranked in the football polls for 31 consecutive weeks, the longest such stretch in the school's 108-year football history. The No. 9 preseason ranking is the highest preseason ranking for the Gamecocks since being ranked No. 2 in the 1992 NCAA Division II preseason poll. JSU was also preseason ranked No. 9 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com poll, which was released last week.

Since joining the OVC in 2003, Jax State holds the highest winning percentage of all FCS teams. The Gamecocks have won 76.6 percent of their conference games, a 48-15 record, while Eastern Kentucky is second with a 70.6 all-time winning percentage in OVC play.

The Gamecocks had one of the most successful seasons in the school's Division I history in 2010, posting a 9-3 overall record and being ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls. JSU also advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs and hosted its first home playoff game in 18 years at the newly renovated Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium. The season started with the Gamecocks claiming one of the biggest wins in school history, a 49-48 double-overtime thriller at Ole Miss.

Jax State is the preseason pick to win the Ohio Valley Conference and opens the 2011 season against UT Martin on Thursday, September 1. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Burgess-Snow Field.
The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.
