Father of hit and run victim speaks out

Posted: Updated:

The father of a woman who was killed by a hit and run driver is speaking out.

Mike Carter is still trying to cope with the reality that his daughter, Rebecca Carter is gone.

Madison police said Carter was hit by a car as she and a friend were walking along Shelton Road, between Portal Lane and the Flagstone apartments around 10:30 Thursday night.

Mike said he got the call from detectives about an hour later.

"The Madison police department informed us that my daughter Rebecca had been involved in a hit and run accident, and that she was gravely ill, and that we needed to get to Huntsville Hospital as fast as we could," he said.

Mike, who lives near Nashville, said he got to Huntsville Hospital around 2:30 Friday morning, just before Rebecca passed. Rebecca had just turned twenty and was recently hired as an EMT worker.

He said he had only heard that detectives were looking for a suspect driving a white SUV, but Friday evening, police arrested Pamela Sanders and charged her with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident.

"I believe that there was alcohol involved and excessive speed," said Mike.

Court records show that Sanders was arrested back in 2004 for a previous DUI.

Carter's funeral will be held at Spry Funeral Home Wednesday in Florence.
