NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Nacogdoches ISD and the Nacogdoches Public Library partnered together to put on Thursday night's performance, a show celebrating and embracing the Burmese culture in East Texas.

"It's very unique. I thing everyone's really excited that the Burmese people are here," said Robby Robertson, Nacogdoches ISD communications department.

Hundreds came out to see Burmese song and dance at the high school.

"I'm really excited about the Burmese, who are here in our community. And, I just thought this would be a way to learn more about their culture and to see some of their exotic dancing," said Nacogdoches resident, Peggy Price.

"Trying to bond and blend the two different cultures that we have because obviously they're here now, and they're going to be a part of our community. And, so we want people in Nacogdoches to know as much about them," said Robertson.

Some residents said they've heard a little about their culture through travel and research. They felt coming out tonight would put them more in touch with the Burmese traditions.

"I feel sad for them running from their own country, and I just hope all goes well for them here," said Nacogdoches resident, Freida Johnson.

"We try to, you know, promote our nationality, you know. We try to let people, all the world, know we are Burmese," said Burmese Nacogdoches resident, Beh Reh.

Burmese residents came out to share their culture with others.

"They can get an idea about how things are going, you know, what our country look like," said Reh.

Nacogdoches ISD will welcome over 30 Burmese students this school year. The Burmese are excited about the opportunities East Texas offers them through work, school, and culture.

"Great to see their culture, and to see things that they do in Burma, as a part of Nacogdoches," said Robertson.
