Gurley standoff suspect taken into custody

GURLEY, AL (WAFF) - A man behind a standoff in Madison County will likely face charges.

Authorities were called to First Street in Gurley just after 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Deputies said a man with a gun was threatening to harm himself under a tree at home near the Piggly Wiggly.

The incident forced the store to lock down while authorities dealt with the situation.

Authorities said he fired one shot in the ground and one in the air.

"The Madison County Sheriff's Department Swat team used a less than lethal use of force to take him down and subdue him without causing any further harm," said Sgt. Brian Chaffin.

The standoff ended shortly before 6:30 p.m.

The man was taken to Huntsville Hospital for evaluation.

Charges are pending.
