Florence, AL -
Police say a 22-year-old Florence man arrested in connection with the theft of debit cards is back in jail after he was accused of assaulting his mother.
Shelby Myers Hurd is charged with domestic violence third-degree assault. He was arrested Sunday on charges of second-degree theft of property, Florence police detective Justin Wright says Hurd is accused of stealing the debit cards from a residence near his house.
Hurd was released Sunday on $3,000 bail in connection with those charges.
Police Sgt. Craig Blasingame says Hurd is accused of hitting his 53-year-old mother with his fist and whipping her on the legs with a belt.
Authorities said she declined medical treatment. Court officials say Hurd is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bail.
