Governor Robert Bentley announced the creation of the Alabama Economic Development Alliance. The Alliance, created by Executive Order, is charged with more effectively utilizing the job creation and workforce assets of the state and creating a statewide economic development strategic plan.
The group will focus on recruitment of new business and industry, retaining and expanding existing businesses and creating jobs through innovation, entrepreneurship, research and development.
"For the first time in Alabama, we are bringing together economic development groups on both the state and local levels, as well as our 4-year and 2-year institutions at one table," said Governor Bentley. "Creating jobs is my number one priority. This Alliance will work to develop Alabama's first statewide strategic plan to ensure the people of this state have the jobs they need and deserve."
A newly formed Alabama Marketing Allies make up the membership of the Alliance. The Allies include the Director of the Alabama Development Office; the President of the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama; the Chair of the Alabama Marketing Allies; the Chancellor of the Alabama Community College System, representing the Alabama Workforce Training System; the Chancellor of the University of Alabama System, representing universities and research organizations; and three local economic developer designees from the Economic Development Association of Alabama.
The Alliance clarifies the roles and responsibilities of the state's lead economic development agency and others involved in economic development. Memoranda of Understanding have been executed between each member group and the Alabama Development Office.
The Alliance will be chaired by the Speaker Emeritus of the Alabama House of Representatives, Seth Hammett, until the strategic plan is completed in December 2011. Upon completion of the strategic plan, the newly appointed ADO Director Greg Canfield will serve as chair and oversee the implementation of the strategic plan.
