Huntsville school board to hold first-ever Saturday meeting

Posted: Updated:

The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education will hold its first-ever Saturday meeting on July 16th at 4 p.m.

One of the major issues is overcrowding at Providence School. New Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski said one possible short-term solution would be to bring in half a dozen mobile classrooms. Wardynski added, however, that it would only be a band-aid and not a long-term cure.

"What we'd be doing is making things worse and worse for students. So, what I'm going to be proposing to the board is a different approach, which will be to look at Williams School, which is about 50% of capacity right now, new facility, great school and how we could leverage that to reduce the crowding at Providence," said Wardynski.

Board of Education President Topper Birney said moving students could be difficult for some, but that the superintendent's idea is a good one during such a difficult time for the school system.

"It's something that just has to be done. We can't go around building new schools every time one gets overcrowded," said Birney.

The superintendent said transportation issues will be covered during the meeting.

"We've designed these alternatives in a way that's not going to change the situation for how a parent would get a child to school. The parents won't have to go somewhere else. The child will arrive at Providence, and we'll take it from there," added Wardynski.

Seven items are on the agenda, including the selection of eight new principals and the job description for the school's chief financial officer position.
