Report of Phil Campbell Community Center break-in false

Posted: Updated:
PHIL CAMPBELL, AL (WAFF) -

A false report of a theft at the Phil Campbell Community Center is spreading on the internet.

The rumor is that the center was broken into earlier this week and donated tents and water for tornado victims were stolen.

The message showed up Thursday on the Facebook group Disaster Relief for Franklin County, Alabama.

The post read: "Dear neighbors and friends, someone stole all the cases of water and tents from the community center. When the workers arrived this morning they discovered them missing. If you or someone you know is in need please just ask for help. I honestly believe whoever did this is not from Phil Campbell so be on the watch out for prowlers and thieves!"

The Phil Campbell Police Chief said some water outside the building was taken, but he believes it was by a tornado victim and no crime was committed.

"I believe what happened was someone came by and was actually a little more greedy than should be and got more water than they should have and got more tarpaulin," said Chief Merrell Potter.

However, Chief Potter said the building was never broken, but his office is going to investigate who took the supplies outside the distribution center.
