HARRIMAN, Tenn. (AP) - Harriman police officers killed a 28-year-old woman after they say she pointed a handgun at them as they responded to a burglary call. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identifies the woman killed yesterday as Miranda Michelle Guy. The agency has not publicly identified the Harriman officers involved.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam has been visiting several schools throughout the state to promote his free tuition plan. The governor will wrap up his visits today at a high school in southeastern Davidson County.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam has named Circuit Judge Timothy Lee Easter of Brentwood to fill a criminal appeals court vacancy created by the retirement of Jerry L. Smith. Easter will take the appeals court bench on Sept. 1.

CALIFORNIA CITY, Calif. (AP) - The nation's largest private prison company has paid more than $8 million in back wages and benefits to current and former employees at its federal prison in California City, California. The U.S. Department of Labor said yesterday that Corrections Corp. of America paid the money to staff at the California City Correctional Center after an investigation found it wasn't paying the rates required of federal contractors. Corrections Corp. is based in Nashville, Tennessee.
