Volunteers selling wood to raise money

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Many of our neighbors along the road to recovery still need help.

Lockhart Road in Madison County was devastated by twisters and many of the homeowners were uninsured.

There is a way you can help. For every piece of wood cut and split, the money goes into rebuilding the community.

"We've been welcome with open arms. That's the one thing they have shown us is their gratitude. They are grateful we are here," said Robert Hartley.

Hartley is volunteering with the Presbyterian Disaster Relief.

The group's first day on the job is spent splitting up this massive pile of wood at the old basketball court on Lockhart Road.

A machine does all the work, with the flip of a switch, with each log being cut down the middle.

Then comes the hard part, volunteers must stack the wood into cords to sell.

Hartley said he and his wife have been volunteering their time the past ten years, but haven't seen devastation quiet like this.

"It's hard to believe our part of Pennsylvania we get very few tornadoes or hurricanes and the like. This is rather unique. Something we haven't seen before," added Hartley.

Nearly every home on Lockhart Road was either destroyed or damaged. Some homeowners didn't have insurance.

That's why Presbyterian Disaster Relief group is working so hard to help them rebuild their lives.

"This is a very valuable community," said Robert Johnson, Harvest Youth Club.

That's why the group wants to sell as much wood as they can, as soon as they can.

All of the wood piled on the court has to be removed from the property by July 4th. Volunteers need a barn or dry place to store it.
