Rutherford County Marine Killed In Afghanistan 8-10-2010

For the third time in a week, a local service member has been killed in Afghanistan. This time a Marine from Rutherford County has died.
Pfc. Vincent E. Gammone III, 19, of Christiana, Tenn., died Saturday in the Helmand province. Gammone was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Monday would have been Gammone's 20th birthday. He graduated from Eagleville High School in 2008.
"The last time we talked to him was the Friday before the accident," said Jessica West, Gammone's girlfriend. "He sounded in good hopes. He was excited to come home."
The high school's band director Kelly Medford said Gammone was a leader. When recruiters told him he needed to lose weight to join the Marines, Medford said, Gammone saw it as an opportunity to enlist other students in his quest to become a lean, mean, fighting machine.
"It was his nature to be a protector, and it was his nature to keep people happy," said Medford.
In a separate incident, 21-year-old Spc. Michael Stansbery from Mount Juliet, Tenn., was recently killed by a bomb in Afghanistan. Funeral services were held Sunday.
On Friday, Daniel Greer of Cheatham County was killed by an improvised explosion device. The 25-year-old Marine and firefighter leaves behind a wife and son in Ashland City.
