Huntsville, AL – Where the Tennessee Smokies (32-19) made mistakes, the Huntsville Stars (27-23) made opportunities in the 4-3 series opener victory.
The Stars crossed two unearned runs in the second inning on a play where third baseman, Josh Vitters overthrew first base. In the third inning, Sean Halton got on first after another miscue from Vitters. Halton would come around to score on a Brandon Jones single. With a 3-2 lead in the eighth, Sergio Miranda came on to hit for starting pitcher, Wily Peralta (3-5) and delivered with a single. Miranda would reach third after two wild pitches then come in to score on a sacrifice fly by Erik Komatsu.
For the Smokies, two of the teams three runs came on solo homeruns in the seventh and ninth, both by catcher Blake Lalli. The other Smokies run came after Nelson Perez reached on a double; he was driven in on a single by the starting pitcher Brooks Raley. Batters one thru five in the Smokies lineup were held 0-for-18 with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Wily Peralta handled the Tennessee lineup going six innings giving up one run on just three. He struck out six and walked three en route to his third win of the season. Reliever Rob Wooten picked up his second save with the Stars, pitching two-thirds of an inning, allowing a solo homerun in the ninth. The newest addition to the Stars roster, Zelous Wheeler went 2-4 with some great defensive plays at the hot corner.
