Safety advice for boaters this Memorial Day weekend

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Memorial Day weekend signifies the start of boating season, so Alabama Marine police will be out making sure everyone has a fun but safe time out on the water.

Marine police Sgt. Jeff Lowery said before you go out, you need to make sure you have enough life jackets for everyone onboard. Also be sure to have your license, registration, and a fire extinguisher.

"This year we're going to focus, of course, on boating under the influence, careless operation," added Lowery.

With a recent drowning in Lake Guntersville, Lowery says everyone must be careful around the water.

"If you're not a real strong swimmer, at least wear your life jacket or at least have one in reach at all times," he said.

The recent tornadoes have also affected the lake leaving hazardous debris both submerged and not submerged.

The boating season runs through Labor Day.
