Huntsville Police and emergency crews responded to the scene of a shooting around 10:25 Friday morning at 1565 The Boardwalk inside InTown Suites.

About 20 minutes later, police reported that they picked up the suspect, 32-year-old Calvin Leatherwood at Oakwood University's church along with the weapon used. A church employee called police after Leatherwood showed up at the chapel.

"He probably saw the steeple and knew that there was a church here, so he probably came here for sanctuary," said Captain Melvin Harris, Oakwood University campus police.

Police say Leatherwood was a guest at the hotel.

Kevin Lane Moore, an employee of InTown Suites, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Police said his injuries were life threatening, but Moore survived surgery.

Collier Daily, spokesman for InTown Suites, said they are aware of the situation in Huntsville and employee and guest safety is of utmost importance. He also said the company is cooperating with police in the investigation.

Leatherwood was charged with attempted murder and booked into the jail and is being held on $30,000 bond. Police said his motive is unknown.

Police said Leatherwood died in his jail cell Sunday morning. Investigators said it was a suicide.
