JACKSONVILLE – Andrew Maning had four hits to lead UAB to a 14-11 win over Jacksonville State at Rudy Abbott Field on Tuesday night.
Michael Busby scattered four hits over three innings to earn his first win of the season, while Ryan Nance recorded the final three outs to earn his eighth save. JSU's Daniel Watts (0-5) got stuck with the loss for the Gamecocks.
JSU (28-19) took a 1-0 lead in the first after Coty Blanchard scored on a Ben Waldrip infield grounder, but the Blazers pushed across five runs in the third inning to build a 5-1 lead.
Jake Sharrock scored on an Erick Underwood infield grounder in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-2 for the Gamecocks, but UAB added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to build a 7-2 lead.
Sam Eberle slugged his eighth home run of the season with a solo shot in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-3, but UAB answered with four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to build a 12-3 lead.
Jax State rallied to score eight runs in the seventh inning – all with two outs – to pull within 12-11 as the Gamecocks sent 13 batters to the plate. Stephen Bartlett, Ben Waldrip, Erik Underwood, Scott Underwood, Michael Bishop, Eberle and Blanchard each had hits in the inning.
UAB's Coy Arrowood drove in two runs with a one-out double in the top of the ninth inning for the final margin.
Nick Crawford added three hits for the Blazers, while Arrowood, Jamal Austin and Ivan De Jesus each had to more hits as UAB finished with 17 in the game.
Michael Bishop and Eberle each had three hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Erik Underwood had two more hits and drove in three runs as JSU finished with 13 hits in the game.
The two teams will face each other again on Wednesday in Birmingham. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
