FEMA assistance available for lost food

Posted: Updated:

No power for days meant hundreds of valley families threw away tons of food. You may be able to get federal money for all of those lost groceries.

"We've heard that, where somebody had just gone grocery shopping. Had  freezer full of food, had a refrigerator full of food. And the only way to find out if you're going to be eligible for any kind of assistance is to register for assistance. Register with FEMA," said FEMA spokesperson Don Bolger.

There are federal eligibility guidelines for food assistance money, but they are adaptable.

Your home must be in the disaster area and your household has to be buying and preparing meals. Also, if you fall under at least one of the following criteria:

Your home or self-employment property is damaged; you have disaster-related expenses you have paid, or will pay, not reimbursed by May 26th; the disaster stopped or delayed your income; the disaster made your bank account inaccessible; or if you lost food because of power outage.

Then, factor in take home pay. A one-person household is eligible for food assistance with up to $1,503 a month average take home. That number increases between $311 to $328 for each additional person.

FEMA officials say it's important to know that these are just guidelines, they are bendable, and they assess each case one at a time.

"Nothing is set in stone. If you have a situation that is medical, or transportation needs whatever they may be you may be eligible for more assistance based on those needs," adds Bolger.

If FEMA denies your claim, you can file an appeal. Victims can file a claim by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or can register online at disasterassistance.gov.
