Tornado victims rest on Mother's Day

Posted: Updated:

After a week and a half of intense clean-up from the storms, it was hard to find storm victims working outside Sunday. First Baptist Church Eclectic provided a place for folks to take a load off and get a hot meal. The only thing was, there weren't many of them out and about.

"This is God's kitchen and that's what we're here for to love God and love our neighbor," says Cheryl Roberson.

But that didn't stop Roberson, who has been here serving up food and sack lunches for victims and volunteers all week.

"Physically, I'm very tired, but the tired that I have, that's just a moment. And it goes away and God gives me the next strength."

Thankfully for this meal, someone else was in charge.

"It's just something that I feel is right to do," says David Gadhile, owner of Jim N' Nicks Barbecue in Montgomery and Prattville.

He decided a few days ago to bring food to the church, but that meant spending Mother's Day here.

"My first reaction was to call my wife and ask her what she thought of it. She said that's good. That's what you need to do."

Church pastors say the hardest thing about the relief efforts, "finding out who the individuals are that need help and what kind of help the different individuals need," says Senior Pastor, Britt Green.

But for now, Roberson knows folks will always need food.

"We will continue this next week with hot meals and sack lunches."

Roberson says she plans to contact FEMA and the Elmore County EMA to see what else the church can do to help in the recovery process.
