Millington, Tenn. — The University of North Alabama's 10-game winning streak came to an end in a 5-2 decision to Harding in the second round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at USA Stadium.
With the loss the Lions, 35-11, will face the winner of the Arkansas Tech-Valdosta State game on Sunday at noon in an elimination game at USA Stadium. UNA led 2-0 after the first inning but couldn't mount another offensive threat.
Harding pitcher Lucas Waddell held the Lions to just five hits and only two after the second inning in getting his second complete game win over UNA this season. He improved to 9-2 with the win, allowing just two runs on five hits in nine innings of work. He walked two and struckout six.
UNA starter Chad Boughner (8-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over six innings. He walked four and struckout two. Casey Jones pitched three scoreless innings of relief for UNA.
North Alabama broke on top with two runs in the first inning. Michael Schmidt had a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by Blake Stroth. After Josh Cyr was hit-by-pitch, Jake Sloan delivered a two-run double down the left field line.
Harding put its first run on the board in the third when Chase Presley had a leadoff triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Nappi.
The Bisons took the lead in the fifth inning with three runs on two hits. Boughner walked two batters and Eric McCarver delivered a two run single. Another run scored on an error and Harding led 4-2.
Harding added to its lead in the seventh when Presley had a leadoff single and scored again on a Nappi sacrifice fly.
UNA had won 10 straight, prior to the loss and 20 of its last 23 games.
