Athens officer involved in multiple car crash

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) An Athens Police Officer has been treated and released from a local hospital following a multiple car crash early Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from the Athens Police Department, Officer Brandon Turner was involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Mooresville and Newby Rd. around 6:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Turner was in the process of turning from Newby to Mooresville Rd. to block traffic for utility workers repairing power lines in the area, when his patrol car was struck by a Buick Regal.

Police say the Buick was driven by Melanie Dickerson of Athens.

After striking Turner's patrol car, Dickerson then collided with a Chevrolet Impala stopped at the intersection. The driver of the Impala was not injured, and minor damage was sustained to the vehicle.

Officer Turner was taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital where he was soon released once treated for minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
