UAH baseball holds on for 10-7 win

Jumping out to a 9-2 lead, the Alabama-Huntsville (26-16) baseball team held on for a 10-7 win over non-conference foe Montevallo (18-24) on Wednesday afternoon at Charger Park in Huntsville.

UAH wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a four-run bottom of the first to start the game.  Junior center fielder Ty Chancelor (Decatur) and junior first baseman Jon McKinney (Hackleburg) started the rally with back-to-back singles to leadoff the frame.  Junior third baseman Eric Deese (Tuscaloosa) then delivered a one-out single to open the scoring in the contest as Chancelor came across the dish.  Senior designated hitter David Reiniger (Calgary, Alberta) then made it a 3-0 advantage with a 2-RBI single to right before junior catcher Eddie Villalta (Miami) hit a sacrifice fly to left that rounded out the first-inning scoring.

The Falcons cut the UAH lead in half in the top of the fourth on a two-run blast by UM's Heath Perterson but the Chargers rallied right back with a five-run fifth to take a 9-2 advantage.  A leadoff single by freshman second baseman Tyler Dorning (Athens) got things started for the Chargers.  The rookie came in to score two batters later when Chancelor singled to left after freshman right fielder Trey Hendrick (Nashville, Tenn.) moved Dorning into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.

UAH then loaded the bases as McKinney reached on a wild pitch on a swinging third strike and junior shortstop Grant DeBruin (Boaz) reached on an infield single.  Deese then dug in at the plate and laced a shot over the Falcon center fielder's head that cleared the bases of Chargers.  Deese then came home himself on the play on an errant throw by the UM shortstop making it 9-2.

The Chargers held onto the seven-run cushion until the late innings when the Falcons pushed across three runs in the seventh and another pair in the eighth to make it a two-run game at 9-7.  Freshman catcher Ben Carr (Stockbridge, Ga.) helped give the Chargers a bit more of a cushion in the eighth as he ledoff the frame with a double, eventually allowing pinch runner Corey Whittle (Cullman) to score on a single to left by Hendrick.

Montevallo threatened again in the top of the ninth putting a pair of runners in scoring position but sophomore  reliever Cody Barrett (Mufreesboro) was able to douse the comeback attempt to earn his second save of the season.

Freshman southpaw Drew Eiland (Auburn) picked up the win going the first three innings scheduled on a day that UAH used eight pitchers. Eiland improves to 4-1 behind the one-hit, one-strikeout performance.

The Chargers hit the road this weekend for their final Gulf South Conference road series of 2011 at West Georgia on Friday and Saturday.
