UAH baseball falls to top ranked West Florida

A day after earning a doubleheader split against top-ranked West Florida, the Alabama-Huntsville (25-16, 7-7 GSC) baseball team dropped Sunday's Gulf South Conference rubber game to the Argonauts 10-2 at Charger Park in Huntsville.

UWF wasted no time getting on the scoreboard after losing game two of the Saturday's twinbill as the Argos pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the first.  The Chargers countered with a run in the bottom of the first as junior third baseman Grant DeBruin (Boaz) laced a double down the left field line and then scored on a single to center by junior right fielder Eric Deese (Tuscaloosa).

The Argos would push across a run in fourth and another in the fifth to jump out to a 4-1 cushion before the Chargers cut the margin back to two runs with a tally in the bottom of the sixth.  Junior first baseman Jon McKinney (Hackleburg) got things started with a leadoff double to left before freshman catcher Justin Riddle (Huntsville) plated McKinney with a single to center field.

The two-run margin was short-lived however, as the Argonauts used a three-run, seventh-inning blast by Josh Higgins to make it a 7-2 lead before tacking on two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to round out the scoring.

Senior Dustin Bryant (Fyffe) took the loss for UAH going four and two-thirds innings.  Bryant gave up four earned runs and six hits while issuing six walks and fanning two Argos.

The Chargers continue home action on Wednesday hosting Montevallo at 1 p.m. at Charger Park.
