Accident involving police officer leaves 2 dead

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - State troopers are investigating a two vehicle fatal accident involving a police car.

It happened at on County Road 217 near the intersection at County Road 460 in Lawrence County around 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

State troopers say North Courtland police officer Brandon Shane Mundy, 29, failed to stop at stop sign and struck a 1994 GMC Sonoma pickup truck on the driver's side front fender area.

The pickup truck was headed north on County Road 217.

Both the driver and passenger of the vehicle were killed.

Troopers identified the victims as 62-year-old Gary Wayne Cox and his wife, 53-year-old Sandra Standridge Cox, of Town Creek.

Officer Mundy was taken to Decatur General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

North Courtland Police Chief Alex Taylor says he has placed Mundy on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Taylor says Mundy was on his way to help another police department with a funeral procession at the time of the accident.

Chief Taylor tells WAFF 48 News his heart goes out to the victims' families.

No charges have been filed at this time.
