BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama swept the Gulf South Conference East Division baseball awards for April 4 as UNA's Michael Schmidt was named GSC Player of the Week and Johnny Hornbuckle was named GSC Pitcher of the Week.
Schmidt became the fifth different UNA player to be named East Division Player of the Week this season and Hornbuckle's selection marks the third time a UNA pitcher has been honored in 2011.
Schmidt a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., helped guide the Lions to a 4-0 week. Hitting in the lead-off spot, he reached base and scored in three of the four games in the first inning, giving UNA leads in all three contests. He accounted for 11 runs, scoring seven and driving in four more, and he also notched a .632 on-base percentage. He was 4-for-11 at the plate led by a double and a home run, and he also drew seven walks and was 3-for-3 on stolen bases.
Hornbuckle, a junior from Huntsville, Ala., hurled a seven-inning complete-game shutout in the Lions' 5-0 triumph at West Georgia. He allowed just six base runners and one extra-base hit while fanning seven batters. The outing marked Hornbuckle's second complete game of the season.
