The Auburn football team held its third practice of the 2011 spring season Saturday morning, working out for two hours in Jordan-Hare Stadium. It marked the first spring practice inside Jordan-Hare Stadium after the Tigers worked out at Hutsell-Rosen Track and the Auburn Soccer Complex during their first two practices.
Saturday's practice was the first of the spring season in full pads, adding an extra element of physicality to the workout. The Tigers followed much of the same formula that they used for their first two practices, focusing on individual and position drills, as well as 7-on-7 drills.
Following practice, head coach Gene Chizik noted that the addition of pads to the practice routine helped increase the intensity of the workout.
"I felt the energy level was really high, and I felt like they're really focused," said Chizik. "We've only practiced three days, so I'm not buying stock in this yet, but it was the third really good day of some extremely focused kids. That's good because I think they understand the challenges of people fighting for jobs."
With the group in full pads, Chizik noted that the Tigers were able to do more in terms of working both on and against the running game.
"The emphasis on today's practice was the physicality, being the first day in pads, and running the ball, stopping the run, being physical at the point of attack on both sides of the ball," said Chizik. "We did enough to at least get some initial evaluations on some of these young guys."
Chizik also stated that the staff expects mistakes to be made on the field, but if the focus and energy remain high, they can deal with mistakes in the spring.
"As long as the focus is there, and the energy is high, we know that it's going to be challenging in terms of mistakes and corrections and things of that nature," said Chizik. "But as long as the other elements are there I think we can continue to improve, so that's the plan."
The Tigers will resume spring practice on Monday at 8:45 a.m. CT. All practices are closed to the public.
