Behind an explosive output from the middle of the lineup, the Alabama-Huntsville (17-10) baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of visiting Lambuth (6-19) 11-1 in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Charger Park.
Led by the heart of the order that went 6-for-11 with eight RBI and six runs scored, UAH wasted no time putting Lambuth in a hole as the Chargers pushed across a pair of runs in the first and three more in the first to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Eagles scratched across a run in the third but UAH answered back with two in the fourth and two more in the sixth to make it a commanding 9-1 advantage. A three-run bottom of the eighth then ended the game early on the 10-run rule as junior left fielder Mike Love (Auburn) laced a single to left that brought home junior right fielder Eric Deese (Tuscaloosa) and freshman catcher Justin Riddle (Huntsville).
The UAH backstop led the Chargers with a 3-for-5 outing at the dish with a pair of runs driven in. The three and four hole hitters, senior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) and Grant DeBruin (Boaz), each drove in a trio of runs each and scored a pair in the win.
Sophomore reliever Cody Barrett (Mufreesboro, Tenn.) picked up the win in relief of starter Lance Gibson (Toxey), who tossed the first four innings scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run. Barrett worked the fifth and sixth innings to notch his first win of 2011 allowing only one hit and one hit-by-pitch. Senior Joe Dunlap (Campbellsville, Ky.) and junior David Kendrick (Pell City) worked the final two innings for UAH.
Now 15-3 at Charger Park, UAH hits the road this week for a Tuesday midweek contest across town at Alabama A&M, followed by a key Gulf South Conference series at West Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.
