Major meth trafficking operation busted in Sand Mountain area

Posted: Updated:

Accused drug traffickers in custody tonight.

A major roundup has just wrapped up in DeKalb, Marshall, and Etowah Counties.

41 people have been rounded up, six are seen as big pushers, nearly all are in the country illegally.

They also found lots of guns, money, and dope. 15-thousand in cash, weapons, and meth. "That is a little over a pound right there. It's probably around 30-thousand dollars worth.  That's pure ice right there," said DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

FBI agent Pat Maley said, "For some reason North Alabama has become a foothold for significant Mexican traffickers."  But DeKalb, Marshall, Etowah County Sheriff's along with federal officials announced some big players now off the street are facing meth trafficking and distribution charges.

John Lee Owen Wilbert of Albertville along with five other illegal immigrants are now facing federal charges.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris says the operation in the last week has primarily been in the Kilpatrick area but also in Sylvania and Collinsville.

With new laws tightening access to Pseudoephedrine, Sheriff Harris says mass meth production is moving away from the local makers. "And so they have changed their direction in trying to bring it in from their super labs out of Mexico," said Sheriff Harris.

Officials with the Safe Streets Task Force say this is their second such major roundup and it won't be their last. "It's ongoing and will continue, we hope, for many more months and many more years," said Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls.

Officials said 28 of those arrested were done so administratively and face deportation through an immigrations judge officials also said one of the major players, Jose Guadalupe Garcia-Garcia, had previously been deported.
