ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WBRC) – The Etowah County Sheriff's Department says they have come to a verbal agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement(ICE) to allow the Etowah County Detention Center to keep 300 detainees until March 31, 2011.
This comes after ICE made a move to remove all of the detainees from to a facility in Georgia, leading to the loss of a federal stipend and leaving the county with the burden of a bond issued to pay to make room for the detainees.
Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin has traveled to Washington to discuss the issue with the Alabama Congressional Delegation and ICE officials.
