BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After finishing second in the league in scoring, Alabama-Huntsville guard Jasmine Hammon (Muscle Shoals) has been named 2010-11 Gulf South Conference East Division Freshman of the Year as announced by the league on Monday. The newcomer also garnered a first-team All-GSC selection along with fellow newcomer Jordan Smith (Hoover).
Averaging a league second-best 18.3 points-per-contest, Hammon becomes only the second Lady Charger to earn Freshman of the Year honors, joining Kristen Banes, who earned the nod in 2004-05.
A two-time GSC East Player of the Week this season, Smith finished the season right on Hammon's heels in the scoring department averaging 17.6 points-per-outing as a rookie.
Smith and Hammon become the first pair of Lady Chargers to earn first-team All-GSC honors at the same time since Jessica Russell and Banes completed the feat in 2006-07.
The Lady Chargers finished the 2010-11 season 11-15 overall and 6-6 in GSC play just narrowly missing the GSC tournament.
