Madison County DA offers amnesty period for bad check writers

Posted: Updated:

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Officers in Madison County will soon round up bad check writers, but first they're giving them a chance to pay back what they owe.

The district attorney is announcing an amnesty period. The bad check writers have one month to pay up. After that, they'll be arrested.

This is a pretty common practice for this crime, but this time Madison County is doing something a little different. For the first time the DA's office will let qualifying offenders use a payment plan to pay back their debts. They're hoping this will make it easier for business owners to get their money back.

The list of worthless check warrants will come out tomorrow on the DA's website. People can search to see if they have a warrant for writing a worthless check. They'll have until April 1st to pay back what they owe, and they won't have to pay court costs, attorney fees, or bond.

The district attorney's office says they want to make it easier for people who may have unintentionally broken the law to take care of their responsibilities before facing serious consequences.
