Decatur, AL -

DECATUR, AL (WAFF)-  Decatur High School's gymnasium will have a slightly different name soon.

The gym was named after legendary boys' basketball coach Earl Morris in the early 90's.

During a recent city board of education meeting, the name of Decatur High's first girls' basketball coach, Mike Smith, was suggested as an addition.

Smith started the girls' varsity program in 1976 and coached until 2005.  HE helped them win five state championships and had the most winning record in the state when he retired.  He's also a member of the Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame.

Although there was some opposition, the board voted to change the gym's name to the Morris/Smith Gymnasium.
