SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) - Sheffield Police, ABI, and the Colbert County D. A. are investigating after an inmate died Sunday morning inside the Sheffield Jail.

Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray says officers responded to a call for a fight last night at Another Level Bar and Grill. When they got there they came across 32-yr-old Kenji Simmons. Chief says he was disoriented and had cut above his eye. Police took him to the hospital where he was treated for the cut, then released back into their custody.

They put him in a Sheffield jail cell for the night. Then hours later, they say other inmates alerted the guards that something was wrong with Simmons. Paramedics pronounced Simmons dead at 5:50am.

The Colbert County coroner is taking his body to the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

An investigation is underway into what happened at the bar and grill and also at the jail. Nobody else has been taken into custody at this time.
