AUBURN – Senior cornerback Demond Washington is one of five players that received Paul Hornung's Most Versatile Performances of the Week recognition, it was announced Monday by Paul Hornung and the Louisville Sports Commission.
Washington, who was honored for his performance during Auburn's 51-31 victory at Ole Miss Saturday, was named prior to the season to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is designed to recognize versatile, high-level performers in major college football.
Washington excelled both as a kick returner and cornerback during Auburn's victory at Ole Miss. He returned five kickoffs for 176 yards, including a 95-yard return for a touchdown in the second quarter to give Auburn a 31-17 lead. His 176 return yards is third most in a game in school history and his 95-yarder was the second return for a touchdown of his career.
Defensively, Washington had six tackles, intercepted a pass and had a pass break-up. His interception came in the second quarter at the 2-yard line following an Auburn turnover with the Tigers clinging to a 17-14 lead.
A panel of experts will select the inaugural winner of the Paul Hornung Award in early January 2011.
