EAST LANSING, Mich. - A night after mounting a 3-goal, third-period comeback to rally for a tie, the Alabama-Huntsville (1-6-1) hockey team fell just shy of another one falling 2-1 to 11th-ranked Michigan State (4-0-2) at Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich.
The Spartans used the power-play to open the scoring in the contest as Brett Perlini scored from Torey Krug and Matt Grassi at 7:36 of the first.
The 1-0 score held until the third period when the Chargers had to kill off a five-minute major for Charging. The extended power play proved to be the difference in the contest as Grassi scored the eventual game-winner at 4:40 of the third.
The Chargers power-play unit finally got their first chance since the first period at 7:15 of the first and UAH capitalized. Freshman forward Mac Roy (Chilliwack, British Columbia) made the play for UAH bringing the Chargers within one with his third goal of the season. Blueliners Tom Durnie (Calgary, Alberta) and Matt Baxter (Courtice, Ontario) picked up assists on the play.
A late penalty against the Spartans and an empty net gave the Chargers a two-man advantage but UAH could not find the heroics they had in Friday night's tie and MSU held on for the win.
UAH wraps up the eight-game road swing next weekend at Ohio State on Friday and Saturday before coming home to host Providence on Nov. 12-13 at the Von Braun Center.
