Samford cross country runners Lauren D'Alessio and Layton Dorsett have been honored as the Southern Conference Women's Runner of the Week and Men's Runner of the week, respectively, for their performances last weekend in the Samford Invitational. The league office announced the awards on Wednesday.
It is the second weekly honor for both runners, as D'Alessio earned it in week three and Dorsett earned it in week four. D'Alessio was also named September's Female Cross Country Athlete of the Month last week.
"This shows the consistency that both of those young people have been running with this season," Samford head coach Rod Tiffin said. "This is Lauren's third award and Layton's second. Hopefully, they will maintain this throughout the season."
D'Alessio, a sophomore from Birmingham, Ala., ran an 18:06.28 on a very slow and tough 5K course at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala. She helped lead her team to a second place finish at the Samford Invitational, which was a preview meet for the 2010 NCAA South Regional Championship. D'Alessio has been the top runner for the Bulldogs in every meet this season.
Dorsett, a freshman from Birmingham, helped lead the Samford men to a second place finish at the Samford Invitational. He ran the tough 8K course in 27:17.18 for an eighth place individual finish. Dorsett was also the top runner for the Samford men two weeks ago at the Brooks Memphis Twilight.
The Bulldogs are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 16, when the team travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the Front Runner Invitational.
