SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) - One student is rushed to the hospital, while another faces drug charges in Scottsboro.

Police say it all stems from prescription Adderall pills, which is prescribed for ADHD, in school, but where the child got them is still under investigation.

In her twenty-five years teaching, Donna Gardner never remembered a child at school distributing prescription pills at school.

"You would think in a small town, probably, it's not likely to happen," said Gardner.

A 17-year-old Scottsboro High School student has been charged after a fellow student was taken by ambulance to the hospital last week when he became sick at school, presumably from taking the pills.

"During questioning there were some pills, Adderall, 16 Adderall were located on this subject," said Scottsboro Police Sgt. Scott Matthews.

Matthews says they do not know where the juvenile obtained the drug prescribed for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, but says it's becoming a problem.

"The pills used is becoming an issue. It's something we've been dealing with for a while now, but it seems to be getting worse and worse," said Sgt. Matthews.

The Scottsboro officer says the drug can be very addictive.

"Adderall has Amphetamine in it which is going to be similar to Methamphetamine."

Matthews says the problem is kids don't realize the dangers of taking pills not prescribed for them.

"You start combing your own medications, then you start to see serious medical issues, and up to death," said Sgt. Matthews.

Matthews says the juvenile has since been released to his parents.

He also says parents should always keep their medicine cabinets locked so their children cannot get into them, and they should keep a count of all medicines as well.
