BILOXI, MS (WLBT) - The names of 170 Mississippi victims of Hurricane Katrina were sandblasted on a memorial Saturday in preparation for Sunday's ceremonies in Biloxi.
It would have been 169 if not for a chance encounter. Dennis Cowart, who designed the memorial, was tasked with compiling a list of the dead and missing. He thought the tally was complete until a former client, Phil McCuien, stopped by his Ocean Springs office in July and mentioned his wife has been missing since the 2005 hurricane.
Now, Jeannette McCuien's name is on the memorial. A complete list of victims may be impossible to compile because some people may never have been reported missing, and may have washed out to sea.
