HANCEVILLE – Newcomer Luis Helguera scored a goal in both halves to propel Wallace State's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Spring Hill College in the Lions' exhibition season opener on Thursday afternoon.
Helguera accounted for Wallace State's second goal with 13:17 remaining in the first half and added his second less than two minutes into the second half.
Scott Nightingale, Hunter Smith and Kevin McEntee each added a goal to Wallace State's offensive attack.
"I feel like we've got a talented bunch this season," said Wallace State coach Barry Spitzer. "We are a young team, but I saw a lot of good things in this match. The mistakes we made are fixable and typical of young teams. We can correct them as we continue on."
Nightingale and Brandon Servellon had an assist apiece for the Lions, Drew Hannan had four saves at goalkeeper and Tony Makela added three against the NAIA school from Mobile.
Wallace State led 2-0 at intermission.
The Lions continue exhibition play on Aug. 24 at Union University at Jackson, Tenn.
The 2010 season opener is Saturday, Aug. 28 at home vs. Mississippi Gulf Coast College beginning at 2 p.m.
