WILHELMI JOINS THE UNA MEN'S BASKETBALL STAFF FLORENCE -- Former Howard University coach James Wilhelmi has joined the University of North Alabama men's basketball staff as an assistant coach, Lions' head basketball coach Bobby Champagne announced Thursday.
Wilhelmi spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Division I Howard, located in Washington, DC. He was the recruiting coordinator and played an integral role in Howard's 2009-2010 recruiting class in which two players were voted by conference coaches to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team.
Wilhelmi brings a wealth of experience to UNA, including stints at nine other schools. Prior to his stay at Howard, he served as an assistant men's basketball coach at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. He also served as the head boys' basketball coach at Sussex Central High School in Georgetown, DE from 2003 to 2004.
His other coaching stops were at the University of Evansville from 2002-2003, Texas Southern University from 2001 to 2002, University of Maryland Eastern Shore from 2000 to 2001, Hampton University from 1998 to 2000, Northeastern Illinois from 1997 to 1998 and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for two years.
His duties have included assisting with game preparation, administrative responsibilities and recruiting.
Wilhelmi received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater (1995) and a Master of Science degree in human development and community resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1997).
As an athlete, Wilhelmi played prep basketball at La Follette High School in Madison, Wisc., and went on to letter in football at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for three years.
Wilhelmi fills the spot vacated by Cord Wright who left following the 2009-10 season.
